U16 WOMEN

Serbia won their battle to preserve their Division A status in the U16 European Championship for Women with victory over Croatia in Cagliari.

But Finland will have to plan for life in Division B in 2012 after their relegation was confirmed on Saturday with a 75-59 loss to Poland.

The Finns' fate was sealed by a slow start that saw the Poles go 11-2 ahead and there was no escape when they trailed 42-21 at half-time.

The Serbs had to work much harder for their crucial win, coming from ten points down to come out on top 70-60 and secure 13th overall place.

Sanja Mandic hit 5 of her game-best 26 points in succession to give her team a narrow 36-35 advantage at half-time. And although Croatia briefly led in the third, a 16-3 run from Serbia was decisive.

It means that Poland and Croatia will meet in what is effectively a play-off on Sunday with the winner taking the other spot in next year's Division A.

In the classification play-offs, Russia, who beat France 80-67, will face off with Greece, who defeated Sweden 74-50, for fifth place on Sunday with the Swedes and French deciding seventh.

The last day of the tournament will also see the Czech Republic take on the Netherlands for ninth and Hungary meeting Slovakia for eleventh.
