U16 WOMEN

Belgium wrapped up a spot in the second round of the U16 European Championships for Women with a 69-40 victory over Poland, which condemned  their rivals to fourth place in Group A and perilous trip into the relegation round.

Consistent offense and perimeter defence proved key for the Belgians who led from start to finish, pulling clear in the second half as the Poles faded away.

An-Katrien Nauwelaers had a game-high 22 points and was a major factor as her side steadily increased their advantage.

26-12 at the end of the first period, their cushion grew to 44-23 at half-time. Poland went scoreless for four minutes in the third quarter as their struggles continued, falling as much as 64-32 behind with six minutes left in the fourth.

Belgium complete the first round group against Slovakia on Saturday while the Poles, who were headed by 8 points from Domenika Duraj, will face Sweden.
