The basketball history of Albena is closely linked to that of near-by Varna - a city with a proud basketball tradition, stretching back to 1923.
In 1969 the men's team Cherno more (Black Sea) became part of the elite group of Bulgarian basketball. They have since three times been the champion of Bulgaria and three times the winner of the Cup of Bulgaria. They have also participated in the Sapporo Cup, Korac Cup and Cup of the Champions.
In 1985, Georgi Glushkov who had played for the club, became the first Eastern European basketball player to play in the NBA, joining the "Phoenix Suns". Glushkov is current President of the Bulgarian Basketball Federation.
The team of "Cherno More" is proud to have many players who played in the team and later participated in the national men's basketball team. This list includes Plamen Alexiev, Vladimir Marinov, Todor Stoykov, Deyan and Kaloyan Ivanov (currently playing in Italy and Lithuania), Asen Velikov and Bozhidar Avramov.
One of the most talented and highly promising young female players, Borislava Hristova, comes also from Varna.
One of the most significant coaches of the team is Simeon Varchev, who coached the national team for the period 1989 - 1993. In 1992 he was named the best coach in Bulgaria and in 2000 was named as Coach of the Century of the city of Varna.
